Fingrid improves the security of energy supply in Lapland

Fingrid is expanding Isoniemi substation in the municipality of Kittilä in Lapland. The project will improve the reliability of the region's electricity network. The main contract for the Isoniemi substation was signed on Tuesday with Siemens Osakeyhtiö. 

Equipment such as a second main transformer and larger switching stations will be built in the 220/110/20 kilovolt (kV) substation in the vicinity of Kittilä in order to improve the security of energy supply. In addition to Siemens's main contract, ABB Power Grids Oy has been selected as the maintenance provider of the transformer being transferred from Kristiina. The total value of the contracts is approximately EUR 9 million and the entire project will be completed in autumn 2021.

The largest electricity consumers in the area are the ski resorts of Ylläs and Levi, along with the municipalities of Enontekiö, Muonio, Kittilä and Kolari. In exceptional circumstances, the loads of Suurkuusikko, the largest gold mine in Europe, as well as the City of Tornio and municipalities of Ylitornio and Pello are also fed from Isoniemi. The second main transformer and expanded switching stations will facilitate the management of exceptional situations and thus increase the security of energy supply in the future.
